Summary
Book of Darkness does a respectable job and makes a reasonably fun addition to the “book of” genre. The Power Free Spins adds something a little bit fresh to things and the RTP is on the high end of the side for 2020. Full marks for that. I would have liked to have seen the paylines worth more to instil a higher level of excitement at triggering the bonus and i feel this is where a lot of “book of” slots go wrong – just up the value of the paylines and it’s 10x more exciting to play!!!

How it Pays and Plays
5 reels and 3 rows give us 10 fixed paylines whilst the RTP is set at a very respectable 96.48%. The variance has not been revealed but i would guess at it being around a medium level after playing out a few hundred spins on it.
The maximum win is 25,600 euros which is 640x the max bet available. Bets range from 10p/cents to $/£/€40 for a single spin.
There is a the obligatory expanding special symbol bonus round and a slightly more complicated battle type bonus where you get to choose a character.
Symbols and Graphics
The setting for the Book of Darkness slot seems to be underground in some kind of cave with a column rising up to either side of the slot reels. There are glowing, magical looking rocks in the foreground and the reels are jet black, helping the symbols to pop out nicely. It’s an overall dark wizardly type feeling you get, made me want to open the curtains for some real daylight actually. It looks well designed but I’m not personally a fan.
The top paying symbol is the “Book of Darkness” which triggers the free spins bonus. This pays out 0.2x, 2x and 20x for 3, 4 or 5 of a kind and 10, 15 or 20 free spins respectively.
The Wild symbol is also the book and can substitute for all symbols except for the Dark Wizard and the Huntress.
Then the premium symbols are the Dark Wizard and the Huntress which both pay 25x for 5 of a kind. Then we have some red crystal rock type gems and a blue and silver ring which both pay 15x for 5 of a kind. Then there is a purple potion bottle and a knife, paying 8x for 5 of a kind. The lower paying symbols are Aces, Kings and Queens which pay 5x for 5 of a kind. You can see how all these symbols look in the image below.
Free Spins Bonus
Get 3 or more Scatter symbols (the Book of Darkness) and the free spins round begins. You’ll receive 1 special symbol and it will expand when you land 3 or more in view. The symbols do not need to be next to each other to form winning combos.
One thing to take note of is that you have to land 3 of the special selected symbols for it to expand, if you get two it won’t happen, even if it is a premium symbol.
It’s not like a lot of the “Book of” slots in this respect. You also cannot retrigger the free spins bonus, so there’s no chance for extra spins or an extra symbol to be added, which is a little unfortunate. However, the bonus below goes some way to making up for this.
Clash for Power Free Spins
If you land a Book symbol and a Huntress or Dark Wizard on the same line next to the Book then you’ll get to trigger the Clash for Power Free Spins.
Here you have to choose which character you want to side with. If you go for the Huntress and she wins the clash then you’ll get 10 free spins with a 5x multiplier attached to all Dark Wizard, Huntress, Ring and Crystal symbols. If the Dark Wizard wins then you will get 5 selected symbols which expand when 3 or more land.
You’ll only get the Power Free Spins to activate properly if your character wins the clash however. The Clash will play out with an unlimited set of free spins during which every time 3 or more of the Huntress or Dark Wizard symbols land they will expand, reward you with their monetary value and then add to the meter which is located on either side of the reels corresponding to either character. The first character to fill their meter is the winner. It sounds a bit complicated but if you watch our video above you’ll see exactly how it works.
